Crochet Amigurumi Bunnies for the Gift or Baby Mobile

Crochet Amigurumi Bunny Free PatternCrocheted amigurumi bunnies have the same basic pattern, but look different from each other because of their outfit and face expressions. Such toys are fun – each one separate or together as a group. They make funny gifts to people of any age, especially when you add a special message. It is all about the details :-)

These four bunnies are fixed on our son´s crib. Sweety reminds Little Dragon to be as wonderful and unique as he is. Magician takes care that he (and we too!) remembers that each one of us is a Magician, and we can see and feel the magic every day, all around us :-) The King is there to teach him that every person is the king of own life. And the Joker encourages this child (and again – us, his parents too) to have fun no matter what!

You can see the big difference that details make by comparing the picture above (where all bunnies are wearing their accessories) with the picture below at Step 7 (where bunnies are without their accessories).

If you want to see the reason these bunnies were given their personality and character qualities – read the message near the end of this post.

STEP BY STEP TUTORIAL OF HOW TO MAKE CROCHET BUNNY:

Materials used: 100% cotton (suitable for 2.5-3.5 mm crochet hook) in joyful colors. I used Schachenmayr SMC Catania cotton yarn, and 2.5 mm crochet hook. For eyes I used smaller size hook: 1.5 mm and finer yarn.

Abbreviation: ch= chain stitch, sl st= slip stitch, sc= single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc= double crochet, tr= treble crochet, 4-tr cluster = 4 treble crochet stitches worked in the same stitch and joined together, sc2tog= single crochet next two stitches together to decrease the amount of stitches, st= stitch.Amigurumi crochet toys patternSTEP 1Crochet all body parts necessary (pattern is below).

Each bunny needs nose (either brown or pink color) and a detail for cheeks. These details are differentears (of different length or shape), eyes and mouth.  Creating different bunnies adds more fun also to the process of creation :-)
Each bunny needs these body parts in fitting colors (4 photos above): two cups of half body (to sew together to form a ball for the body), 4 feet2 ears1 tail (pompom).

BASIC CROCHET PATTERN FOR BUNNY`S BODY PARTS (play with colors as you please):

R6: ch 1, sc 12, sl st in the 1st sc st of row (12 sts). Fasten off.

There are three types of EARS that are crocheted: 1) regular size and shape ears, 2) long ears (Magician Bunny has them) and 3) folded ear (Sweety Bunny has one of them – where the flower is around it). Pay attention to pattern description below, to be sure you are crocheting the right type of the ears.

My Little Dragon´s favorite bunny is the Magician – due to its long ears. It turns out that long ears are perfect to grab with baby´s small hands.

Crochet bunny ears tutorial

EARS (make 2) PATTERN FOR BASIC REGULAR SIZE (or for long size) EAR:

R0: ch 10 (ch 20).
R1: (see picture 2) insert hook in the third ch from hook, sc 7 (sc 17), 4 sc in the 8th ch, continue crocheting around the chains (picture 2) by working sc 6 (sc 16), 3 sc in the same ch where the 1st sc of this round was made, sl st to join to the first sc of this round (20 sts for regular ear or 30 sts for long ear).
R2: (see picture 3) ch 1, sc 8 (sc 18), 2 sc in the next st, again 2 sc in the next st, sc 8 (sc 18), 2 sc in the next st, again 2 sc in the next st, sl st to join to the beginning of the round (24 sts for regular ear or 34 sts for long ear).
R3(see picture 4) change color, then ch 1, sc 9 (sc 19), 2 sc in the next st, again 2 sc in the next st, sc 10 (sc 20). This is the end of this line – it is not a complete round (see the picture 4), (23 sts for regular ear or 33 sts for long ear).
R4(see picture 5) change color, ch 1, then crochet backward on the stitches of the previous color: sc 9 (sc 19), skip the next st, sc 2, skip the next st, sc 10 (sc 20). You can hide the ends of the yarn inside the sc stitches that you make (picture 6). When you reach the last st of the previous round´s color, fasten off (21 sts for regular ear or 31 sts for long ear).

You can make the ear that is folded down (see Sweety´s (pink bunny) ear around which there is a flower). To do it you need to crochet regular ear´s R4 as follows: change color, ch 1, then crochet backward on the stitches of the previous color: sc 6, SKIP THE NEXT ST, sc 2, skip the next st, sc 2, skip the next st, sc 2, skip the next st, sc 2, skip the next st, sc 5.  When you reach the last st of the previous round´s color, fasten off (19 sts).

Crochet toy cat nose cheeks pattern

NOSE (make 1):
R0: ch 4, sl st in the 1st ch to form ring.
R1: ch 1, sc 8 in the ring, sl st in the 1st sc st of row (8 sts).
R2: ch 1, sc 5 (5 sts). Fasten off.

CHEEKS (make 1):
R0: ch 7.
R1: 2 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc 4, then 4 sc in the next ch. Continue crocheting around the ch line. Sc 4, then 2 sc in the 1st ch (where the first 2 sc of this Row 1 were worked, so that the 1st ch of Row0 now has all together 4 sc sts in it), then sl st to join to the beginning st of this row (16 sts).
R2: ch 1, 2 sc in the 1st st, then sc 6, then 2sc in the 8th st, then again 2 sc in the 9th st, then sc 6, then 2 sc in the last st of this row. Sl st to join to the beginning st of this row (20 sts). Fasten off.

TAIL (make 1): make a pompom. If your bunny is meant for a baby – make sure that you tie the pompom very strong, so that little fingers can not tear out the yarn from pompom. I know it from the experience with Little Dragon who keeps testing the durability of each bunny´s tail.

Amigurumi rabbit free pattern

STEP 2: Fix the tail´s pompom on one of the cups that will form the ball (picture 8).

STEP 3: Stuff both cups of body with filling and sew them together (pictures 9).

STEP 3: Stuff all 4 feet with filling and sew them on the body, so that joined row crochet line of the body would be between left side and right side feet and not visible on the top of the bunny (picture 10).

STEP 4:  Fold the edges at the lower part of ear towards the center to add the shape to the ear (picture 11). Put the bunny on its feet, pin its ears in their place, then sew them on (picture 13). You can experiment with the way you sew on the ears – it will give them different shape (see the picture below).

STEP 5: When you sew on the cheeks (gray detail on picture 12)- give the oval a bit of shape (picture 13), so that cheeks would not be placed flat on the face, but would look as kind of filled. In the middle of the oval it is sewn tighter together to create a look of “8″ laying flat, so that the nose could be attached in the middle of it (picture 13).

STEP 6: To make nose (picture 12)- at first sew its outside edge together, so that it would form a ball, then sew it on in the middle of the face, embroidering a line over the middle of the cheeks. Embroider the mouth and/or teeth (see the faces of bunnies on the first picture at the top of this article).

STEP 7: Each bunny has different eyes and mouth that make their faces look a bit different. I crochet the eyes with a smaller size hook and finer yarn, so they would not look bulky.

Crochet bunny or rabbit pattern

Crochet with a finer yarn and smaller hook the white part of eyes, sew them on the face and then embroider.

King (orange) and Joker (light blue) have eyes that are made of white crocheted part and embroidered in the middle with the colorful yarn.

Magician´s (dark blue bunny) eyes are made of two different crocheted circles – below is a bigger white part and small green crochet circle is sewn on it. The outside of each eye white is covered with blue stitches to make an eyelid. He also has embroidered eyebrows.

Sweety´s eyes are made of two different crocheted circles – below is a bigger white part and small blue crochet circle with embroidered dot is sewn on it. Her eyes have eyelids and embroidered eyelashes.

For small eyes (eyes of Joker and King, see picture 18): crochet ch 2, then in the 2nd ch from hook work sc 2, hdc 1, dc 2, hdc 1, sc 2, sl st to make ring, fasten off. Embroider the eye with darker color.

For bigger eyes (eyes of Magician and Sweety): crochet ch 3, then in the 3rd ch from hook work dc 5, sc 3, sl st to make ring, fasten off.
Bigger eyes need an inside circle in other color: crochet ch 2, then in the 2nd ch from hook work sc 6 sl st to make ring, fasten off. Sew this circle on the bigger white circle. (Note that inside circle of Sweety´s eyes is embroidered with a dot of dark color.)

STEP 8: Add to each bunny the details that make it special and deliver your message.

DETAILS MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE:

The bodies of bunnies are all the same, only different colors and stripes. The possibilities of additional details that give each bunny its unique look are endless. Below is the description of what I did to create the personality for each of these four bunnies.

If you want to see more options for creating details for each toy, then take a look in the tutorial for CROCHET CATS where each cat also has its own unique a personality.

SWEETY is a lady – she has fancy, big eyes with eyelids and wears a flower

Crochet flower free patternFor EYE LID (make 2) crochet:
R0: ch 5,
R1: sc 1 in the 3rd ch from hook, then hdc 1 in the same ch, then dc 1 in the next ch, then hdc 1 in the next ch and in the same ch work also 2 sc and hdc 1, then continue crocheting around the R0 ch by working dc 1 in the middle ch , then in the last ch work hdc 1 and sc 1, sl st to connect this round (picture 14).
Sew the eyelid on the eye (picture 15).

The FLOWER (picture 16) around her folded ear is crocheted as follows:

R0: (start with yellow color) ch 4, sl st to join them into round.
R1: ch 1, then work sc 14 in this round, sl st to join the round.
R2: (change the color) ch 4, work *4-tr cluster as follows: in the next st work first 2 tr and in the next st other 2 tr, then join all 4 tr into cluster, ch 3, sc 1 in the next st, ch 3*, repeat ** 3 more times, then 4-tr cluster as before, then ch 3 and sl st to join to the 1st ch of this round. Fasten off and weave in the ends of yarn.

Fix the flower around one ear (picture 17).

JOKER wears a joker´s hat

Crochet bunny joker tutorialJOKER`S HAT:
R0: ch 16, sl st in the 1st ch to form ring.
R1,2: ch 1, sc 16 in the ring, sl st in the 1st sc st of row (16 sts).
R3: change color, then ch 1, sc 16, sl st in the 1st sc st of row (16 sts).
R4: change color, then ch 1, sc 16, sl st in the 1st sc st of row (16 sts).
R5: change color, then ch 1, sc 16, sl st in the 1st sc st of row (16 sts).
Now continue making 1 horn in the same color as round 5.
R6: ch 1, sc 8 then sl st in the 1st sc of this round in this color, continue working on this horn (8 sts).
R7,8: ch 1, sc 8, sl st to join the round (8 sts).
R9: ch 1, *sc 2, sc2tog*, repeat ** 1 more time, sl st to join the round (6 sts).
R10: ch 1, sc 6, sl st to join the round (6 sts).
R11: ch 1, *sc 1, sc2tog*, repeat ** 1 more time, sl st to join the round (4 sts).
R12: ch 1, sc 4, sl st to join the round (4 sts).
R13: ch 1, sc 4, then pull the yarn through all sts to close the horn, fasten off and leave enough long end of yarn to fix the pompom. (picture 20).
Now return to  the basis of 2nd horn, take the other color and crochet 2nd horn as before for ROUNDS 6-13 (picture 21).

Make two tiny pompoms (remember to tie the yarn together VERY TIGHTLY because little fingers will be tearing these pompoms and horns more often than one can imagine:-) and sew them on the top each horn (picture 22).
Sew the hat on the bunny and enjoy the way it looks :-)

MAGICIAN - wears a magician´s hat, has teeth and loooong ears.

R4: ch 1, *sc 1, 2 sc in the next st* repeat ** 1 more time, sl st in the 1st sc st of this round (6 sts).
R5: ch 1, *sc 2, 2 sc in the next st* repeat ** 1 more time, sl st in the 1st sc st of this round (8 sts).

R 1, 2: ch 1, sc 18, sl st to join the round.
R3: *ch 4, sl st in the 3rd ch from hook, 2 dc in the same st where first ch was started, skip next 2 sc st from previous row, then sc 1 in the 3rd st*, repeat ** 5 more times, fasten off and leave enough long end of yarn to sew the crown on the head of bunny.

These four bunnies are fixed on the baby crib where our Little Dragon is during the day. Usually one or two bunnies are tied lower, so he can reach them to play (and constantly test how well the bunny holds together). These toys have excellent size for the little hands to play with them.

  6. Hello, I love these. is it possible to get permission to translate them in Dutch and place the pattern with your reference on my blog?? it’s soooooooo adorable :)

    • firegoodness says:

Thank you, Mieke, for your feedback! At the moment I can not offer you such possibility of having the pattern translated and put up on your blog. It is A LOT of work and time for me to create these patterns and tutorials that I put up for free. I have some plans to do charity work via this blog and that´s why these patterns should only be available on this blog. You may post 1 picture from this post on your blog and can copy 1 paragraph from description (but not the pattern part) and provide link to our blog for your readers. While we are working on that charity project – this is all I can offer at the moment. I hope for your understanding.

      • thank you for your reply, off course I understand and for those reasons I always ask before translating something and post it on my blog :) I love your creations :)
thank you very much; if things ever change you can always let me know by email xxx
